The first Sat of Oct is not usually the perfect day for a game of football or hurling but the GAA Gods were shining down on Raheny as the Rebel County sent up the Fermoy U11 team to take on the Dublin representatives from Raheny.
A beautiful morning approaching 20 degrees and the pitches in immaculate condition set the scene for a great encounter between the two sides. The Leesiders arrived with plenty of time to spare and took to the field in the Cork jerseys and awaited the team from Raheny all decked out in the Dublin jerseys. Players in position, refs at the ready, a nervous tension in the crowd and off we went starting with the hurling games.
Some brilliant hurling on both sides with a passion and intensity that was a credit to both counties. Some key tactical decisions from the side-lines meant that the 2 hurling games differed in style, one low scoring defensively minded affair and one shoot out. Raheny emerged victorious with some excellent play against a very well organised and well coached Fermoy outfit.
Some excellent passing and scoring from the Raheny lads was reminiscent of the senior Dublin footballers a few weeks back! Some great wins for Raheny in both football and hurling.
An excellent day was had by all and back to the Club for a mighty spread. Thanks to all the parents who helped out with the sandwiches, coffees and teas and to all the bakers (Aidan, your tray bake was a treat!). The Cork lads left the Club happy & well fed and headed to Croker for the big tour.
Well done to all involved and particularly to the U11 players for a great performance both on and off the field, who dedicated their display to mentor and psychological coach Marius who was absent as he was in the Clinic for a small op…..on his knee!!.
Marius – they did it for you ……..Up The Dubs !!!
