Beautiful weather conditions greeted us at our winter training ground in Clontarf Road as Raheny took to the astro to take on Clontarf in hurling. Raheny started well without really dominating the proceedings. After five minutes, Raheny found ourselves behind by an opportunist goal scored after many attempts to clear our own goal when the sliothar found the back of the net from a Clontarf forward despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Ryan Kent and defender Martin Bishop. This was the only score of the first half despite a few good changes for an equaliser falling to Tiarnan and James that went narrowly wide.

A half time team talk stressing to the boys to pull on the ball rather than tipping it around together with a few positional changes led to Raheny starting with real speed, focus and commitment. Eventually pressure brought a 65 which Adam Roberts buried to the roof of the net for an equaliser.

Clontarf reacted well and scored again quickly but once again Raheny fought back again and scored through Johnny Baldwin after a great puck out from new goalkeeper Cathal Shovlin and great pressure by Sam Mitchell. Clontarf unfortunately scored again to make it 3 goals to 2 but the tide was turning as Raheny were attacking constantly. Eventually great attacking play by Callum, Ceda and Joe created two great chances for Johnny who scored twice to complete a hat trick of scores as Raheny ran out winners by 4 goals to 3.

This victory was really well deserved as this Raheny team never gave up, were totally focussed and committed and in the end got their rewards through a great win against their local rivals.

Well done lads (the Mentors).

Raheny Giants

Mentors: Tony O'Grady, Tony Lawless & Joanne Brennan

Squad: Adam Robinson,  Ciaran Kerrisk, Ultan Fitzpatrick,  Cormac Baldwin,  Dan O'Grady, Max Osborne, Jamie Nolan,  Matt Lawless, John Broderick & Luke Kelly.

This  week the Giants travelled to met Clontarf on their own home turf for the clash of the ash. The Giants took to the pitch very determined from the first blow of the Ref's whistle. Max opened the score board finding  the  back of the net from a long  strike from  Ciaran. For the little ball the threatened the Raheny goal Ultan and Cormac were on hand to take care of business. Jamie was next to step up and provide his team with another great goal. Cormac's accurate puck out found John and John saw it through to be rewarded with a goal. The Giants were really stepping up and working well as a team, calling to each other and finding out their men to move the ball up the pitch. From Cormac's puck out to Max, Max's pass to Ciaran out on the far wing struck with force and yet another score of the Giants. When the air hurling commenced Raheny stepped things up a level. Cormac saved a long struck ball into the hand returned it up the field to John who was unlucky not to get it between the posts. Dan's goal came from a sideline cut from Adam. This score demonstrated the fluency of the Giants hurling. John turned over play picking Adam out up front passing it to Ciaran and again another goal for the Giants. Matt found himself under pressure from two Raheny players just passed mid field. Matt side stepped both Clontarf players and provided the point of the game. First half ended Giants 6g 1pt Clontarf 1pt.

The second half saw more of the same of this style hurling with all players putting in great effort. While there was less scoring the Giants fought hard to over turn call and keep pushing to keep control of possession. Max opened up the second half scores from Luke moving up from the backs with the supply. This was the only score before air hurling. At this stage the Giants really got into their stride. Cormac with his long pucks found his ball flying over the bar for a score. John won a Clontarf puck out and immediately retuned it back to the goalie sending gliding over for another point. Jamie assisted John to defend the posts winning back ball. Dan was supplied with a great clearance from Luke and was quick to get a goal from the supply. Ciaran stepped up to take a 65 which rebounded back out but Ciaran won it back and finished it off with a point. John ended the game with a point resulting from a supply ball from Ultan that made the run up from the backs. The game ended Giants 8g 5 pts Clontarf 2g 1 pt. A great performance by all the lads. Well done!
