Match Report Raheny U14 Footballers - Division 3 Semi Final, Raheny Vs Round Towers(C) Last Saturday saw the Raheny U14 Footballers hosting Round Towers Clondalkin in one of the two Division 3 Semi Finals being played that day. At stake was a place in the final and promotion to Division 2. It was a fine sunny afternoon in St Annes Park and the Raheny lads were in similar fine form. Indeed they managed to start very strongly, putting in a great first half, with a goal from Fiachra O’Flynn and points from Shane Leahy, Joe O’Reilly, Ciaran White and Stephen Allen (1 each) and Aran Kelly and Andy Carroll (2 apiece). Thus, at the break, Raheny found themselves leading their opponents by some eight points (Raheny 1-8 Towers 0-3). However, as predicted by Raheny management, Towers were to rally in the second half. The first fifteen minutes of the half saw both sides trading scores. However, Towers held the upper hand, scoring 3 points and blitzing the Raheny goal, finding the net no less than three times. Meanwhile, over the same period, Raheny were limited to a miserly tally of a single goal from Conor Duffy and a couple of point from play. Thus, Raheny had squandered their commanding lead and were now out in front by only the tiniest of margins. What followed over the remainder of the game was a titanic and nail biting struggle for dominance. Firstly Raheny were able to relieve some of the pressure when, in front of the Towers goal, Shea Grehan plucked a high ball from the air and deftly fired it to the back of the net. However, Tower's responded swiftly with a goal of their own and the margin was again down to 1 point. From there the two sides struggled to get the breakthrough needed and there were several minutes where both sides launched attacks only to find themselves deftly turned over by the opposition’s defence. Then, with less than a handful of minutes on the clock, the Raheny full backs turned the ball over and a long range pass from Ben Mahon dropped into the half forward line and right into the hands of Jamie Reynolds. With Tower's caught out on the turnover young Reynold charged straight down the throat of the Tower's defence and rocketed the ball to the roof of the net. Tower's immediately mounted a counter attack resulting in a chaotic melee on the Raheny goal line which ended up seeing James Crehan emerging from the chaos, ball in hand. With less than two minutes on the clock both sides managed to trade a point apiece but the cool heads and steely determination of the Raheny lads saw them hold their lead to run out eventual winners by a margin of 4 points. (Raheny 4-11, Round Towers 4-7). The win means that the U14's have assured their promotion to Division 2 next year and they now go forward to meet St Vincent's in the Division 3 final to be held next Saturday (10th November) in PNU at 15:00. All support on the day would be welcomed and appreciated.
