Raheny beat O’Tooles tonight, 1-7 to 0-9, and are now promoted to Senior Division 1. Over the last 2 season's these teams have played each other twice in keenly contested, close games. This was a match of two halves, O’Tooles led 0-8 to 0-1 at half time; the only Raheny score was from a David Henry free. With quality ball going in, O'Tooles Farrelly at No 13 was causing our defence all types of problems and scored 3 points from play and 2 frees in the first half.

This left the huge Raheny crowd somewhat subdued at half time, things were not looking good and the team were struggling, as we waited anxiously for the 2nd half. Could we comeback ???

However, a different attitude was obvious from the the throw in. All over the field our lads fought for every ball. A solid defence laid the platform as Raheny fought back with David Henry scoring 4 points in a row, early in the second half.

One of these was a trademark David Henry score, taking the ball off the right hand sideline, from 40 metres he launched the ball off the outside of his right foot and it curled over the bar, this score lifted the team and the Raheny crowd.

Heading in the last 5 minutes, Raheny still trailed by 2 points. Ciaran Whelan was now dominating midfield, laying off and feeding plenty of ball into the full forward line, where we looked dangerous. Colly Hanley,Rob Donnelly, Donal Ryan and all the lads were still full of energy, as Raheny drove goalwards, looking for that elusive goal and a possible victory

The ball was played into John Ryan, who passed it off up the right wing and on into the corner, where it looked dead. However Greg Bennett had other ideas, he exchanged passes and showed great vision (under pressure) to place a hand pass across the box, for the in rushing Mick O’Keeffe to palm into the net.

Unbelievable, the crowd were jubilant and jumping for joy. What a comeback and climax to the game, season, year for the team, mentors and all the Raheny GAA supporters. Could we hang on ?

A suberb goal which gave us a one-point advantage, as the O'Toooles lads drove forwards looking for the equaliser, we battled very hard all over the pitch. The fighting spirit was seen as our half back line crowded their opponents and blocked down 3 O'Tooles point attempts in a row, as we held on for the final whistle.

Best for Raheny on the night were Pete Welsh, Shane Harkin, Paul McCabe, Colly Hanley, John Ryan, Mick O'Keefe, Ciaran Whelan and David Henry (5 points). At the business end of the game, all the lads played their hearts out and were outstanding

Our commiserations to O'Tooles, this is the 2nd year running they have lost the promotion play off final.
